  • Origin & Appellation
From the prestigious D.O. Ribera del Duero, Cuesta de las Liebres 2018 is born on the symbolic slopes of Pago de Carraovejas in Peñafiel (Valladolid). This unique plot, located on marl soils with gypsum and saline outcrops, gives rise to one of Spain’s most prestigious and anticipated wines.
  • Grape Varieties
Made exclusively from 100% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino), an indigenous variety of the region, from bush-trained vines. These vines are grown under extreme conditions, boosting slow and concentrated blossoming that enriches varietal authenticity.
  • Winemaking & Ageing
The harvest is done manually with double selection—first in the vineyard and then at the winery. Grapes are transported in small crates to preserve integrity. Fermentation is carried out by gravity in wooden vats using indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for 24 months in new, extra-fine grain French oak barrels, achieving structure, depth, and classiness.
  • Producer Profile
Founded in 1987, Pago de Carraovejas is one of the most iconic wineries in Ribera del Duero. Its philosophy combines tradition and innovation, with an obsession for quality, respect for the vineyard, and precise vinification. It is part of Alma Carraovejas, a group of singular wine projects united by a common identity: superiority.
  • Handcrafted Details
Cuesta de las Liebres is produced only in exceptional vintages. Each bottle results from meticulous precision viticulture, minimal intervention in the winery, and prolonged ageing. This limited edition wine expresses the purest essence of Tempranillo and the Duero Valley terroir.

About the Winery

Pago de Carraovejas is one of the leading names in the Ribera del Duero region and the Spanish wine scene as a whole. Launched in 1987 by José María Ruiz, the winery was born out of a desire to create a high-quality wine that could be served in his restaurant. Located on the slopes of Carraovejas, in the heart of Peñafiel, its privileged location and firm commitment to innovation have made it synonymous with merit.

Presently, under the direction of Pedro Ruiz Aragoneses and as part of the Alma Carraovejas project, the winery combines tradition, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology. Its vineyard, covering more than 200 hectares, extends over steeply sloping plots with limestone, clay, and sandstone soils at altitudes above 850 meters. These conditions, combined with meticulous precision viticulture, allow the Tempranillo grape to express itself to the fullest.

Pago de Carraovejas was a pioneer in Spain in gravity-fed winemaking, avoiding the use of pumps to maximize the integrity of the grapes. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, and each plot is worked separately to preserve its character. Its wines stand out for their elegance, depth, and aging potential, consolidating the winery as a true icon of high-end Spanish wine.
