  • Origin and D.O.

DOQ Priorat · Vi de Vinya Classificada · Gratallops, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. Clos Mogador 2022 comes from the vineyard surrounding the Clos Mogador farmhouse, conceived as a vast natural amphitheater of llicorella, Priorat's characteristic slate soil. The different grape varieties occupy specific positions according to sun exposure and prevailing winds, forming part of a landscape where olive trees, almond trees, and beehives also coexist.

It is one of the emblematic wines associated with the modern revival of Priorat and with René Barbier, whose family is closely connected to the winemaking history of the region.

  • Grape varieties

45% Grenache · 29% Carignan · 16% Syrah · 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. A blend that combines the Mediterranean identity of Grenache and Carignan with the structure and complexity contributed by Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is a deep and concentrated Priorat, yet one built around freshness, fine tannins, and the distinctive mineral expression of llicorella.

  • Winemaking and aging

The grapes are harvested by hand into 10 kg crates. Upon arrival at the winery, the bunches undergo an initial selection and, after destemming, the berries are selected again on a vibrating sorting table. Fermentation begins with a spontaneous pied de cuve, respecting the indigenous yeasts.
Clos Mogador combines different fermentation methods with extended macerations. The current winemaking philosophy incorporates whole bunches or varying proportions of stems in certain tanks to preserve fruit and freshness. For this vintage, the wine was aged for approximately 20 months, primarily in large oak foudres, with some lots completing their evolution in concrete.

  • Winery profile

Clos Mogador is deeply connected to René Barbier and his family, key figures in the contemporary revival of Priorat. The project has evolved toward an increasingly precise interpretation of the terroir, favoring Grenache and Carignan and using larger-format vessels to reduce the influence of oak while preserving fruit, freshness, and minerality.

  • Special details:

Clos Mogador is recognized as a Vi de Vinya Classificada, a classification that highlights the unique identity of its vineyard. The estate forms a spectacular amphitheater of slate where biodiversity and vines coexist as part of the same ecosystem. The 2022 vintage received 97 Parker points, as well as 95 Peñín points according to specialized commercial sources. Approximately 35,000 bottles were produced and bottled in June 2024.

About the Winery

The history of Clos Mogador is intimately linked to the Barbier family and the revival of Priorat. The family’s winemaking roots stretch back to France and, following the crisis caused by phylloxera, they established new ties with Catalonia.
Decades later, René Barbier would become one of the key figures in the modern transformation of Priorat. Clos Mogador helped demonstrate the extraordinary potential of the region’s traditional grape varieties, its extreme slopes, and, above all, its austere llicorella soils.

Today, the estate is understood as a complete ecosystem. The vineyard forms a natural amphitheater of slate, cultivated along the contours of the land and surrounded by biodiversity. The winemaking increasingly seeks to express the terroir with transparency through spontaneous fermentations, extended macerations, large-format vessels, and an approach to aging designed to support the wine rather than dominate it.

Clos Mogador thus represents one of the historic expressions of contemporary Priorat: power without sacrificing freshness, concentration balanced by elegance, and a minerality inseparable from llicorella.

What flavor awaits me?

Appearance:
Deep, bright red color, with great intensity and a youthful appearance.

Nose:
Complex and Mediterranean in character. Black and red fruits emerge alongside dried herbs, spices, and a distinctive expression of wet slate. With aeration, it develops greater floral, balsamic, and mineral complexity.

Palate:
Deep, juicy, and structured, yet remarkably balanced. It displays very fine tannins, an enveloping texture, and an acidity that maintains tension and prevents any sense of heaviness. The 2022 vintage stands out for its harmony and ripe Mediterranean expression without excess.
