About the Winery

Canadian Club was founded in 1858 by Hiram Walker, a visionary merchandiser and distiller who decided to establish his factory in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, just across the Detroit River from the U.S. border. The location was no coincidence: it allowed him to supply both the Canadian and American markets, avoiding higher taxes than those in North America.

Walker sought to create a smoother, cleaner, and more accessible whiskey than the harsh, heavy styles that predominated in the 19th century. To achieve this, he introduced an innovative blending process for the time, using hand-selected corn, barley, and rye, distilled separately in copper stills and then combined before maturation.

The brand gained great fame during Prohibition in the United States (1920–1933), when Canadian Club became a highly coveted product smuggled across the border. This reputation cemented it as one of the most recognized whiskeys in North America.

Today, Canadian Club is part of the Beam Suntory group, maintaining the original recipe and aging its whiskeys in ex-bourbon American white oak barrels for longer than the legal Canadian minimum. The brand remains one of the icons of Canadian whisky and a mainstay in classic cocktails internationally.
